How to Choose a Small Stove for an Existing Fireplace

Wood-burning, multi-fuel or bioethanol? A guide to heat output, fireplace preparation, installation and choosing a stove that belongs in the room.

An empty hearth has a strange presence. The room was built around it, yet it may have stood unused for years. It still holds the eye, an opening waiting to do something.

Central heating keeps the house comfortable. On a cold evening, though, most of us are using one room. A stove puts supplementary heat exactly where people are sitting, with the flame adding light and movement as the day draws in.

Heat is only part of the attraction. Fire changes what happens around it. Chairs move closer. People stay a little longer. After a day spent working, travelling and following separate lives on separate screens, sitting beside a flame is one of the simplest ways to share a room again.

Bringing the hearth back into use begins with a practical choice. Wood-burning, multi-fuel and bioethanol stoves can all work in smaller fireplace openings, but they produce different levels of heat and ask very different things of the house.

A wood or multi-fuel stove can provide meaningful supplementary heat, together with the sound, scent and ritual of a solid-fuel fire. It also requires a suitable chimney or flue, professional installation and ongoing care.

A bioethanol stove offers a gentler level of warmth and a real flame without using the chimney. It can revive the fireplace with far less disruption and may be either a long-term choice or a way to enjoy the hearth before committing to a solid-fuel installation.

The right starting point is the role you want the fire to play: how much heat the room needs, how often you expect to light it and how involved you want to be in looking after it.

What will 1kW, 2kW or 5kW feel like?

Kilowatts are easy to compare on a product page and surprisingly difficult to imagine in a room.

The physical size of a stove does not tell you its heat output. A compact model may fit a narrow fireplace and still produce around 4 to 5kW. That can be more heat than a small, well-insulated room needs.

A familiar point of reference is a portable electric heater, which is often rated at around 2kW on full power. Radiant heat from a flame feels different and the appliance will not necessarily deliver its maximum output throughout use, but the comparison gives the numbers some scale.

Around 1kW

This is gentle supplementary warmth, most noticeable close to the fire. The flame and atmosphere lead the experience. The Henley Hazelwood Compact Bioethanol Stove produces up to 1kW, making it a good example of a stove chosen primarily to bring an unused hearth back to life.

Around 2kW

Around 2kW can make a noticeable contribution in a smaller room and is similar to the rated output of a typical portable electric heater. The ScandiFlames Bergen produces up to 2.1kW, while keeping the simpler, flueless character of a bioethanol fire.

Around 4 to 5kW

This is meaningful room-heating territory and a common output range for compact wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves. The Salamander Hobbit SE is only 465mm high and 302mm wide, yet it has a 4.1kW output. The Henley Hazelwood Compact Wood-Burning Stove has a 4.9kW nominal output.

Compact describes the space the stove occupies. It does not mean low heat.

The rated figure also needs context. HETAS explains that a 5kW stove will often operate at around 2 to 4kW during an ordinary evening, moving closer to 5kW when the fire is well established and fully loaded. Fuel quantity, fuel quality and the way the air controls are used all affect the heat produced. 

Room size is only part of the calculation. Ceiling height, insulation, draughts, glazing, external walls and open doorways all change the result. Use the kW rating as a broad guide, then ask a suitably qualified professional to consider the room and installation before confirming the final specification.

Wood-burning, multi-fuel or bioethanol?

Picture a cold Tuesday evening. How much do you want to do before the flame appears?

That question often reveals more than a list of technical features. Each fuel creates a different relationship with the fire.

Wood-burning: heat, ritual and the character of logs

A wood-burning stove suits someone who wants the full rhythm of a solid-fuel fire. You need a dry place for logs, kindling to start the fire and time to let it establish. The stove needs tending and the ash needs removing.

In return, you get useful supplementary heat, a flame that changes through the evening, glowing embers and the quiet sound of burning wood. For many people, that involvement is exactly the point.

The house needs a suitable chimney or an appropriate new flue system. The hearth, ventilation, clearances and installation all need to meet the relevant requirements, and the chimney will need regular sweeping once the stove is in use.

Burn dry, suitable wood and follow the appliance instructions. In England, wood sold in smaller quantities must meet the relevant Ready to Burn rules. If you live in a Smoke Control Area, wood can usually only be burned in a DEFRA exempt appliance and in line with its conditions of use. 

Multi-fuel: the same commitment, with more choice

A multi-fuel stove can burn wood and the approved solid fuels listed by its manufacturer. A grate and ashpan help it handle fuels that need air from below.

The advantage is flexibility. You may prefer logs most of the time and want an approved smokeless fuel available for other occasions. The day-to-day involvement and installation requirements remain close to those of a wood-burning stove, so multi-fuel should not be mistaken for the simpler option.

The Hobbit SE is a compact example with a 4.1kW output, top or rear flue connection and DEFRA exempt status. Its scale gives it broad application in smaller fireplaces while its fuel options leave more room for choice.

Multi-fuel does not mean that anything can go on the fire. Use only the fuels approved for the appliance and permitted in your area. Traditional house coal can no longer be sold for domestic use in England.

Bioethanol: real flame with less disruption

A manual bioethanol stove uses a burner that is filled when cool and lit by hand. There are no logs to store and no ash or soot to clear away.

It does not need a chimney or flue, which makes it useful where the existing chimney is unsuitable, has been closed off or simply feels like more work than the room needs. Outputs of around 1 to 2.1kW make these stoves better suited to atmosphere and supplementary warmth than to being the main heater for a room.

Bioethanol can be a long-term choice in its own right. It works particularly well when the aim is to restore flame and focus to a fireplace without taking on the installation and maintenance of a solid-fuel stove.

Combustion still takes place in the room. Minimum room volume, ventilation, clearances and the manufacturer's instructions matter. Fuel must never be added while the burner is lit or hot. Allow the appliance to cool fully before refilling it.

The same silhouette, with a different life behind it

The Hazelwood Compact offers a useful side-by-side comparison because the wood-burning and bioethanol versions speak the same visual language.

The Hazelwood Compact Wood-Burning Stove produces 4.9kW and needs a suitable flue installation. It is designed for someone who wants the heat and experience of burning logs.

The Hazelwood Compact Bioethanol Stove produces up to 1kW and needs no chimney or flue. It brings a real flame into the hearth with a much lighter practical commitment.

They may look related, but they will live very differently in the home. That is why fuel and heat output should lead the choice before the final decision comes down to finish and form.

Preparing an existing fireplace for a stove

A stove has to work with the fireplace, the chimney and the room around it. Fitting inside the opening is only one part of a safe and successful installation.

Useful information to gather includes:

  • The height, width and depth of the fireplace opening, measured at its narrowest points

  • The dimensions and material of the existing hearth

  • The room dimensions and ceiling height

  • Clear photographs of the fireplace, hearth and chimney breast

  • The property's postcode, so its Smoke Control Area status can be checked

  • Anything known about the chimney, previous fires or a blocked opening

These details help a retailer, sweep or installer understand the likely route. They do not commit you to completing every stage before choosing or buying the stove you want.

Does the chimney need to be swept before installation?

If a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove will use an existing chimney, expect the chimney to be swept and assessed as part of the preparation. A flue that has stood unused for years may contain soot, fallen masonry, old nesting material or other debris. Do not light a fire simply to test whether it draws.

A sweep can clear the flue, carry out the checks covered by their service and record what they find. Further inspection or testing may be advised where the chimney's history is unknown or its condition raises questions. A clean chimney is a useful starting point, but sweeping alone does not prove that it is suitable for the new appliance. 

Will the existing chimney need a liner?

Possibly. Age alone does not answer the question.

The installer has to be satisfied that the chimney is sound, suitable for the intended fuel and correctly sized for the appliance. A liner may be recommended if the flue has lost integrity, could leak fumes, is unsuitable for the fuel or needs a different internal size.

An installer may recommend a liner after inspecting the chimney. Where one is needed, the liner, connection components and labour will usually be priced as part of the installation work. 

Top flue, rear flue or a new chimney system?

A top flue rises from the stove and often suits a fireplace with enough height and a direct route into the chimney. A rear flue connects behind the stove and can help where the opening is lower, although the installer still needs room for the correct components, access and clearances.

A house without a usable chimney may be able to use a designed insulated twin-wall chimney system. The route, termination and relationship to the building need professional design.

Flue direction is an installation decision. The neatest-looking route on a photograph may not be the right route for the property.

What changes with bioethanol?

A freestanding bioethanol stove has no chimney connection, so the sweep, liner and flue stages for the appliance usually fall away.

The setting still needs thought. The stove must stand securely, meet the stated clearances and be used in a room that satisfies the manufacturer's minimum volume and ventilation requirements. An old chimney or fireplace that has been sealed may also have its own ventilation or maintenance needs, separate from the bioethanol appliance.

Bioethanol simplifies the route to a flame while the normal rules for safe placement and operation still apply.

Who does what?

A chimney sweep clears the flue and reports on the checks included in the service. Some sweeps also offer camera surveys, integrity testing or other inspections within their qualifications.

The installer considers the appliance output, hearth, clearances, air supply, chimney condition, flue route, carbon monoxide alarm and Building Regulations requirements as part of the complete installation.

In England and Wales, an installer registered with a competent person scheme such as HETAS can self-certify work that falls within their registration category. Another route is approval through Local Authority Building Control. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different systems, so local requirements should be checked. Keep the compliance certificate, appliance manual and future sweeping records together. 

A small stove can still have character

The stove remains visible when the fire is out, which is most of the time. Proportion matters, but so do the viewing window, legs, handle, door shape, surface and the amount of breathing room left around it.

Compact does not have to mean anonymous.

Salamander Hobbit SE: compact and individual

At 465mm high, 302mm wide and 272mm deep, the Salamander Hobbit SE is genuinely small. Its cast-iron body and traditional proportions give it presence without asking for a large opening.

The stove comes in matt black as standard, with personalised colour options available for the door and airflow wheel. Almond, Forest Green, Metallic Blue, Copper and Brass are among the possibilities. The detail is restrained, but it gives the owner a chance to make the stove feel more closely connected to the room.

Its 4.1kW output, multi-fuel capability and Smoke Exempt specification also give the SE version broad practical application when it is installed and used correctly.

Henley Aran: a softer alternative to black

The Henley Aran Eco 5kW Multi-Fuel Stove is larger than the Hobbit at 586mm high and 470mm wide, so it suits a fireplace with more height and width.

Its traditional cast-iron form is available in matt black, black enamel and cream enamel. The cream finish softens the visual weight of the stove and works particularly well when black would feel too stark against a pale stone surround, painted chimney breast or lighter interior.

It produces 5kW and can burn seasoned wood or approved smokeless fuel, combining the decorative finish with the heat and involvement of a solid-fuel stove.

Decorative cast iron with bioethanol

The ScandiFlames Bergen takes another route. Decorative ironwork, traditional feet and a glazed door give it the visual weight of an old Scandinavian stove, while a bioethanol burner produces the flame.

At 697mm high it needs a taller opening, or it can stand as a freestanding feature. Its output of up to 2.1kW gives more supplementary warmth than many smaller bioethanol models, subject to the room meeting the manufacturer's minimum volume and ventilation requirements.

Measurements tell you whether the stove can occupy the space. The face, finish and detail decide whether it looks as though it belongs there.

Bringing the hearth back into use

Choose wood-burning if you want the ritual of logs and meaningful supplementary heat. Choose multi-fuel if you want a similar level of involvement with the option to use other fuels approved for the stove. Choose bioethanol if a real flame, gentler warmth and a simpler route into the room matter most.

Then look at the room itself. Check the dimensions, think about the level of heat, decide how much involvement suits your life and choose a stove you will still enjoy looking at when it is unlit.

A small stove can do more than fill an opening. It can return purpose to the hearth, warm the part of the house where people have gathered and give the room a centre that feels alive.
