Solitary bees are among the garden’s smallest independent workers. They travel alone from flower to flower, carrying pollen as they go and helping ornamental plants bloom, fruit trees set fruit and vegetables produce stronger crops.

But planting only gives pollinators somewhere to feed. The Green&Blue Bee Post gives them somewhere to stay.

Standing 2.3 metres tall, this sculptural concrete post contains approximately 150 nesting cavities for cavity-nesting solitary bees. Positioned close to pollen-rich planting, it creates a permanent habitat where these essential pollinators can settle, lay their eggs and support the next generation.

As increasingly managed landscapes and hotter, drier conditions place greater pressure on wildlife, the Bee Post provides something simple but vital: protected nesting space within the garden itself.

A Home for Nature’s Independent Travellers

Around 90% of UK bee species are solitary bees.

Unlike honeybees, they do not live in colonies, make honey or have a queen and hive to defend. Each female works independently, finding her own nesting cavity and gathering pollen to provide for her young.

This makes solitary bees calm, non-swarming neighbours that are very unlikely to sting. They are safe to encourage around people, children and pets.

They may be small and largely unseen, but their contribution is significant. Solitary bees are highly efficient pollinators, often transferring more pollen during each flower visit than honeybees.

By providing suitable nesting space close to flowers, fruit trees, herbs and vegetables, the Bee Post helps support the quiet, continuous pollination that keeps a garden flowering, fruiting and renewing itself.

Designed and Made in the UK

The Bee Post is designed and made by Green&Blue in the UK.

It is cast from concrete incorporating waste material from the Cornish china clay industry, giving a locally sourced industrial by-product a valuable new purpose within the landscape.

Unlike conventional rough-cast concrete, the finished surface is remarkably smooth, cool and tactile. Its refined finish invites closer interaction and gives the Bee Post the presence of a sculptural garden object as well as a permanent habitat for solitary bees.

The concrete is allowed to dry naturally and includes an integrated waterproofing agent, creating a substantial outdoor feature designed to remain in the landscape throughout the year.

Positioning

Correct positioning is important to encourage solitary bees to use the nesting cavities.

The Bee Post should be installed:

• In a warm, sunny position
• Facing south
• With no vegetation covering or obstructing the holes
• Close to pollen and nectar-rich planting
• Away from areas where it may be regularly disturbed

Positioning the Bee Post close to suitable forage means emerging bees can reach flowers without travelling unnecessary distances.

A mixture of flowers with different shapes and flowering periods will help provide food across as much of the season as possible.

Installation

The Bee Post is designed to be permanently installed in a concrete base and set approximately 300mm into the ground.

Prepare a hole measuring at least 400mm x 400mm and 400mm deep.

Place approximately 100mm of concrete in the bottom of the hole, position the Bee Post centrally and backfill securely around it with concrete up to ground level.

The post may be set deeper where a lower finished height is required, provided it remains securely supported.

Due to its height and approximate 60kg weight, installation should be planned carefully and completed by a suitably competent contractor or landscape professional.

Maintenance

The Bee Post is designed to require very little maintenance under normal conditions.

Where inspection is needed, nesting cavities can be checked in October, once the main nesting season has finished.

Cavities that remain blocked from a previous year may be carefully cleared using a narrow tool such as a tent peg and pipe cleaner. Newly sealed or occupied cavities should not be disturbed.
