Green&Blue Bee Brick®

The Green&Blue Bee Brick® is a simple way to create permanent nesting habitat for solitary bees within gardens, walls and buildings.

Designed to be built directly into brickwork or used as a freestanding feature, it provides protected nesting cavities for red mason bees, leafcutter bees and other cavity-nesting species. Its solid back prevents bees from entering the wall or building fabric, allowing habitat to be incorporated without changing the footprint or function of the structure.

Bee-friendly planting gives pollinators somewhere to feed. The Bee Brick® gives them somewhere to nest.

Designed and made in the UK by Green&Blue, it is formed from concrete containing up to 75% recycled material from the Cornish china clay industry and is available in four colours to suit different architectural and landscape settings.

Supporting Solitary Bees

Solitary bees account for around 90% of UK bee species and play an important role in pollinating flowers, fruit trees and food crops.

Unlike honeybees, they do not live in colonies, produce honey or have a queen to defend. They are non-swarming and non-aggressive, and are very unlikely to sting unless handled roughly, making them safe to encourage around people, children and pets.

Each female bee finds her own nesting cavity, lays her eggs and seals the entrance using mud or chewed vegetation. The offspring develop inside the brick before emerging in spring, when the nesting cycle begins again.

Built into Walls and Landscapes

The Bee Brick® is the same size as a standard UK brick and can be installed directly into mortar as part of:

  • New-build properties
  • Extensions and renovations
  • External property walls
  • Boundary and garden walls
  • Raised beds and landscape structures
  • Retrofit biodiversity projects

It can also be positioned as a freestanding nesting unit within a garden or outdoor space.

The back of the Bee Brick® is completely solid, ensuring bees cannot enter the wall cavity or interior of the building.

Colour Options

The Bee Brick® is available in four colours:

  • Charcoal Grey
  • Red
  • White
  • Yellow

The colour options allow the Bee Brick® to blend with existing brickwork or become a more visible feature within a garden wall or landscape design.

Positioning and Installation

For the best chance of occupation, position the Bee Brick®:

  • In a warm, sunny location
  • Facing south
  • At least 1 metre above ground level
  • With no vegetation obstructing the front or nesting cavities
  • Close to bee-friendly flowers and a reliable source of pollen and nectar

There is no recommended maximum installation height. Research has shown greater uptake when Bee Bricks are positioned at least one metre above the ground.

When building the Bee Brick® into a wall, install it in place of a standard brick using mortar. The front and nesting cavities must remain fully exposed and unobstructed.

Packaged and Unpackaged Options

The Bee Brick® is available in two formats:

Unpackaged
Supplied without individual retail packaging. Suitable for bulk orders, construction projects and schemes seeking to reduce packaging waste and on-site disposal.

Packaged
Supplied in an individual cardboard retail box and wrap. Suitable for individual purchases, resale or gifting.

Fire Performance

The concrete used to manufacture the Bee Brick® has been independently tested to EN 13501-1 and achieves an A1 fire classification.

This confirms that the material is non-combustible and does not contribute to fire growth or spread, making it suitable for projects where building-material fire performance needs to be considered.

Materials and Construction

The Bee Brick® is made from concrete incorporating up to 75% recycled material from the Cornish china clay industry.

Its solid-backed construction prevents access into the building, while the moulded front cavities create protected nesting spaces for cavity-nesting solitary bees.

Designed and made in the UK by Green&Blue, it offers a permanent, low-maintenance way to integrate pollinator habitat into buildings and outdoor spaces.
