How to Choose a Suspended Fireplace: Ceiling, Fuel, Rotation and Room Design

A suspended fireplace starts with a visual idea. Flame appears to float within the room, the floor remains open beneath it, and the fireplace becomes part of the architecture rather than sitting against a wall.

Turning that idea into a workable specification requires more thought. Can the ceiling carry it? Does the model rotate? Will the flame be seen from one seating area or across an open-plan space? Should it be manually operated or remotely controlled? Does it need a chimney, ventilation or another service connection?

The answers depend on the individual fireplace. Understanding these decisions early will help you choose a design that works with the room as well as within it.

Can any ceiling support a suspended fireplace?

A suspended fireplace can only be installed where the supporting structure and fixing system can safely carry the requirements of the selected model.

The visible ceiling finish does not necessarily provide that support. Plasterboard, decorative panels and suspended ceilings may conceal joists, concrete, steelwork or another structure above. The fireplace must be connected to a suitable load-bearing element using the fixing method required by its manufacturer.

Product weight alone does not give the complete answer. The Cocoon Aeris, for example, weighs approximately 23 to 24kg, but its installation manual requires a load-bearing mounting surface capable of supporting at least 150kg.

The difference between models can also be substantial. The GlammFire Premium Perola has a stated weight of 85kg, while the larger Perola Plus weighs approximately 200kg. Each requires its own structural and installation assessment.

Before selecting a suspended fireplace, establish:

  • What structure is present above the finished ceiling

  • The weight of the complete fireplace and suspension assembly

  • The load requirement stated by the manufacturer

  • The correct fixing system for that structure

  • The finished ceiling height

  • The available suspension or tube length

  • The required distance from the floor

  • Clearances from walls, furniture and combustible materials

  • Any flue, ventilation or power requirements

Depending on the building and fireplace, advice may be needed from an architect, structural engineer or appropriately experienced installer.

When should a suspended fireplace be specified?

The best time to specify a suspended fireplace is during the early design stage of a new build, extension or renovation.

Its position can affect ceiling reinforcement, furniture layouts, sightlines, lighting and the route of any required services. Wood-burning models also need a suitable smoke extraction route. Automatic bioethanol models may introduce further operational or access considerations.

Early specification gives the wider project team the opportunity to coordinate these details before ceilings and finishes are completed.

A suspended fireplace can still be considered for an existing room. The first step is to understand the structure above the proposed position and identify which models are realistic for the available ceiling height and room volume.

Does a suspended fireplace need a chimney or flue?

Some suspended fireplaces need a chimney or smoke extraction system, while others are designed to operate without one.

Suspended bioethanol fireplaces

The indoor bioethanol fireplaces in AEMYR’s current collection do not require a conventional chimney or flue. Bioethanol produces a real flame without the ash and chimney smoke associated with burning wood.

A flueless installation still requires careful specification. The room must meet the manufacturer’s minimum volume and ventilation requirements, and the fireplace must have the stated clearances from combustible materials.

As examples, the Cocoon Aeris datasheet specifies a minimum room volume of 45 cubic metres, while Henley’s bioethanol guidance specifies a ventilated room of at least 44 cubic metres. Requirements must always be checked against the exact model and current manufacturer instructions.

Suspended wood-burning fireplaces

A suspended wood-burning fireplace requires suitable smoke extraction.

The GlammFire Thales Firewood is designed for outdoor settings and burns wood or charcoal. Its installation guidance requires a suitable chimney or smoke extraction arrangement, a ceiling structure capable of carrying the fireplace and generous clearances from combustible materials.

Indoor and outdoor classifications must be followed. A fireplace designed for external use should not be moved indoors or into an unsuitable enclosed structure.

Suspended or freestanding: what is the difference?

A suspended fireplace becomes part of the room’s vertical architecture. It draws the eye between the ceiling, flame and floor while leaving more visible space around and beneath the fire.

A freestanding fireplace sits within the floor plan. Depending on the model and fuel, it may offer greater flexibility over placement and avoid the need for structural ceiling suspension.

A suspended fireplace is particularly effective when:

  • The fire will occupy a central or highly visible position

  • Several parts of the room should share a view of the flame

  • The floor needs to remain visually open

  • A wall-mounted fireplace would interrupt the layout

  • The project can accommodate structural assessment and professional installation

  • The fireplace is intended to act as a permanent architectural feature

A freestanding model may be more appropriate where future repositioning, a simpler installation or a more conventional furniture arrangement is important.

Can a suspended fireplace rotate?

Some suspended fireplaces rotate, but rotation should never be assumed from the shape alone.

The Cocoon Aeris can rotate while remaining fixed to its approved ceiling position. The GlammFire Thales Bioethanol rotates through 360 degrees, allowing the opening and flame to be directed towards different areas.

Other fireplaces create several views without rotating. The Henley Milan and Budapest are open on two sides, maintaining a line of sight through the fireplace and allowing the flame to be seen from opposing areas of the room.

Rotation and a 360-degree fire view describe different things:

  • A rotating fireplace can be turned while remaining structurally fixed.

  • A 360-degree fire view allows the flame to be seen from all around the fireplace.

  • A two-sided fireplace creates a view through two opposing openings.

  • A fixed-facing fireplace is designed around one primary sightline.

The surrounding furniture and clearances must work across the fireplace’s complete range of movement. A safe position when facing one direction may become unsuitable after the fireplace is rotated.

How should the room influence the fire view?

Start with the places from which people will actually experience the flame.

A fireplace serving one seating area may only need a strong single view. In an open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, rotation or a two-sided opening can give the fire a role across several zones.

Consider:

  • The view when entering the room

  • Where people will sit

  • Whether the flame should be visible from the kitchen or dining table

  • How the fireplace relates to windows and external views

  • Whether it will divide or connect different areas

  • The position of curtains, lighting and circulation routes

  • Whether rotation would be used in daily life

A fireplace positioned centrally can give a large room a clearer point of gravity. In a more compact interior, a visually lighter form may preserve openness while still giving the room a strong focal point.

What does a suspended fireplace do to the feeling of a space?

Suspending the fire moves the visual focus away from the perimeter of the room. The flame can become a meeting point between several areas rather than belonging to one wall.

The vertical suspension also introduces height. In a double-height room it can connect upper and lower volumes. In a standard-height interior it can create a clean line between the ceiling and fire, provided the proportions and clearances are right.

Different designs produce different effects.

The oval Cocoon Aeris has a lighter, more fluid profile. The GlammFire Perola and Perola Plus use broader circular forms that occupy more visual space. Thales has the scale and presence to hold the centre of a generous interior or outdoor setting.

The fireplace remains part of the room when the flame is off, so its shape, finish and suspension system matter throughout the year.

Which fireplace finish works with the room?

Finish can help the fireplace settle into the material palette or become its strongest point of contrast.

White

A white suspended fireplace can feel lighter against pale walls and ceilings. It can also work within a colour-drenched room where the fireplace needs definition without the weight of black.

The Cocoon Aeris, Henley Budapest and selected GlammFire models offer lighter finish options.

Black

Black gives the fireplace a clear silhouette. It works particularly well with warm timber, stone, natural rugs and softly coloured interiors. Against a neutral or colour-drenched scheme, it can anchor the centre of the room.

Polished and reflective metal

Polished steel picks up colours, light and movement from its surroundings. It can connect with metal-framed glazing, lighting, hardware and reflective surfaces without matching them exactly.

Copper, brass and gold-toned finishes

Warmer metals introduce another layer of colour and can tie the fireplace into lighting, handles and other details. The Cocoon Aeris is available in copper and brass combinations, while GlammFire offers specialist interior and surface finishes on selected models.

Corten steel

Corten introduces a weathered, textural surface. It has a warmer quality than polished metal and works naturally with stone, timber and outdoor architectural materials. It is available on selected GlammFire designs.

Manual or automatic bioethanol fireplace?

The choice affects lighting, flame control, refilling and how often the fire is likely to be used.

Manual bioethanol burners

Manual burners are filled, lit, adjusted and extinguished using the tools supplied with the fireplace. They do not require an electrical connection and have fewer operating components.

Current manual options include:

  • Cocoon Aeris: 1.5-litre burner, up to five hours of burning time and up to approximately 3kW heat output

  • Henley Milan: 1.5-litre burner, up to approximately four hours and around 1kW output

  • Henley Budapest: 3-litre fuel capacity and up to approximately seven hours

  • GlammFire Premium Perola: 2-litre burner, approximately 2.7kW output and four to six hours of burning time

The burner must be completely extinguished and allowed to cool before refilling. Fuel should be kept in its original closed container and stored safely away from the fireplace.

Automatic bioethanol burners

Automatic burners provide electronic ignition and controlled flame adjustment. Selected GlammFire models can be operated by remote control and are designed for longer periods of use.

  • GlammFire Perola Plus: 5-litre tank, adjustable output of approximately 2.25 to 3.5kW and a stated burning time of nine to fourteen hours

  • GlammFire Thales Bioethanol: 10-litre tank, adjustable output of approximately 2 to 4kW and a stated burning time of fifteen to twenty-five hours

An automatic burner may suit a frequently used living or hospitality space where convenient operation and longer burn times justify the larger fireplace and investment.

A manual burner may suit a home where the fire will be lit for part of an evening and simple mechanical operation is preferred.

Does a suspended bioethanol fireplace heat the room?

Yes, a suspended bioethanol fireplace produces genuine heat, but its role depends on the output, room volume and individual model.

Heat outputs across the current collection vary from approximately 1kW to 4kW. Some models provide gentle supplementary warmth, while larger automatic burners create a more noticeable heat contribution.

A bioethanol fireplace is generally best treated as a source of flame, atmosphere and supplementary heat. It should not automatically be assumed to replace the main heating system for the property.

What is a suspended bioethanol fireplace like to live with?

A bioethanol fire avoids log storage, ash removal and chimney sweeping. It introduces its own routines around fuel, ventilation and refilling.

Before choosing a model, consider:

  • How the burner is filled

  • The amount of fuel it holds

  • Typical burning time

  • Manual or remote operation

  • How the flame is adjusted and extinguished

  • The room’s ventilation

  • Safe fuel storage

  • Cleaning and access to the burner

  • The time required for the burner to cool before refilling

  • How children and pets will move through the room

All suspended fireplaces contain real flame and become hot during use. They should never be left unattended. Furniture, curtains and other combustible items must remain outside the manufacturer’s required clearances.

Which suspended fireplace is right for my project?

Choose by working through the project in this order:

  1. Confirm the intended location. Decide where the fire should be seen from and how people move around it.

  2. Assess the supporting structure. Establish what sits above the finished ceiling and whether additional support may be required.

  3. Choose the fuel. For the current indoor range, this is primarily bioethanol. Thales Firewood provides a separate wood-burning route for outdoor projects.

  4. Choose the fire view. Consider fixed, two-sided, rotating or 360-degree designs.

  5. Decide how you want to operate it. Compare manual burners with larger automatic systems.

  6. Check scale and ceiling height. Review the complete product dimensions, suspension range and relationship with the floor.

  7. Review room and clearance requirements. Confirm ventilation, minimum room volume and distances from combustible materials.

  8. Select the finish. Consider the fireplace alongside the room’s walls, floor, furniture, lighting and hardware.

  9. Plan professional installation. Coordinate the fixing, ceiling structure and any required services before work is completed.
